Humewood house, an organization dedicated to helping pregnant and parenting young women build safe and stable lives for themselves and their children, recently commissioned Kingsland to provide design, contract administration, and project management for it’s newly renovated pre and post-natal residential wing.
The renovation was undertaken in the summer of 2001 following a community review of social trends that indicated an urgent need for post-natal beds in Toronto. The addition of three beds brings Humewood House’s total bed capacity to 15- with accommodation for five young mothers with infants.
The design mandate was to modify a floor solely comprised of single pre-natal rooms into a floor with a combination of one third single pre-natal rooms and two thirds post-natal rooms. In addition, the floors required a barrier free four piece bath room and refurbished gang washroom / shower and tub room. The entire floor was to appear as residential in flavour as possible and provide more privacy to the temporary occupants. All furnishings, fixtures and accessories including finishes were dealt with as if a single detached home were being designed but within allowable budget and time frame to meet the Owner’s needs.
According to Sue Sigurdson, Executive Director of Humewood House, “The addition of these post-natal beds means we will be able to provide a period of stability for at-risk teen parents and their vulnerable children. We’ll also have an opportunity – during this crucial early stage – to monitor and assess the parent/infant relationship”
