Banting Memorial High School – Renovations and Addition
Total scope of work for this project included extensive renovations to an existing large high school that had to remain in operation throughout the process.
Project included renovation of existing classroom spaces together with a new addition to replace an existing outdated Life Skills Classroom, renovation of Family Studies and Sewing Classrooms, update and replacement of existing fire alarm and security systems, upgrade of the existing hydronic heating system throughout, installation of a new building automation controls system, removal and replacement of all corridor ceilings and lighting and installation of a new ventilation air system. The work also included renovations and equipment replacement in fan rooms located throughout the building, window replacement in the Cafeteria, shop wing and Music Rooms and flooring replacement in some corridors and classrooms.
The special nature of the occupants in mind, aesthetics of the new Life Skills Classroom was designed with a full spectrum colour palette while flirting with geometric shapes and forms. With the use of an array of colours from within the colour wheel in similar tints and tones, this space became warm and inviting. The geometric shapes in standard floor materials and ceilings provide the end users with visual interest along with sensory stimulation. The shapes and forms also assist in subconsciously designating spaces for specific functions.
In order to complete the work with minimal effect on the school program the work was completed in two construction phases, tendered separately. This would allow the bulk of renovation work in occupied areas of the school to be completed over summer months when school was not occupied.
