We were the original Architects for this large high school, completed in 1992 incorporating a complex building program with multiple school & community functions, which continues to play a significant role in the life of young people and their families in this emerging highly multi-cultural community. Middlefield Collegiate truly is a community school and it is seen increasingly by all members of the community as a place of meeting for learning, recreational, religious and community events.
The building was designed, at the outset, for future expansion as the community grew and the need for additional teaching spaces increased. This project is the first addition to this facility and provides a total of fifteen new classrooms, three teachers’ workrooms, three storage rooms as well as custodians’ rooms, hub room and service rooms on three floors. The existing building circulation, emanating from a four storey central atrium, was originally planned to accommodate future expansion on all three floors. This resulted in a natural and efficient continuation of the corridor system into the new addition and also allowed the addition to be constructed without effecting the normal operation of the school.
