Kingsland Architects Inc. has been commissioned by Brampton Library to design and oversee the construction of a significant addition to the existing library including major renovations to both the interiors and shell of the 1982 facility.
The Library Board has requested that the building be designed to and be applied for LEED certification. We anticipate a LEED Silver designation.
Some of the sustainable features for the building and site include:
· solar and wind orientation
· drought tolerant planting and naturalization
· roof rainwater harvesting for irrigation of the landscaping in tandem with drip irrigation systems to conserve water
· surface porosity for ground water recharge decreasing the need for storm water retention
· wetlands and bio-swales to treat parking lot wastewater
· surface reflectivity for optimising day-lighting potential, and shade trees for the outdoor walkways
· environmentally sensitive building materials
· low-flow plumbing fixtures and appliances to conserve water in the building
· a natural day-lighting strategy
· natural ventilation to reduce the need for air conditioning and high-performance glazing to lower the building’s energy demand and increase occupant comfort and control
