The existing high school, consisting of an original 1959 era building and several additions, covered 19,233 m² (207,033 SF). The scope of work required a major renovation to correct program deficiencies mainly in their science program. With the many additions over the years classrooms were added without thought to program efficiency resulting in the science program being scattered throughout the school.
The challenge was to "shuffle" program spaces throughout the school, achieve an end result with the science program in one area on the same floor and at the same time continue to keep the school in operation.
This renovation successfully addressed the science program issue by converting classroom space in one wing of the school to science labs and converting satellite science labs on other floors to classroom space. The end result gives the school ten new updated labs including General Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology all located on the same floor in one wing of the school.
To address the issue regarding operation of the school, the work was completed in phases. The majority of the work in classroom space, all major demolition work in the science wing and all work in corridors was completed in the first phase over the summer months ready for school in September. Hoarding was erected in corridors of the science wing to allow the second phase, finishing work in the labs, to proceed without interfering with the school. The science labs were completed ready for the school's second semester.
