This school was designed in 1987 based upon the premise that students would approach the school site by vehicle off Clarke Avenue as well as by foot from the park and subdivision beyond, essentially from two polar opposite directions. Hence, the school has two fronts; a street front and a park front.
The two entrances are joined by one continuous street atrium as a glazed central gathering place.
The building’s similarities to a shopping centre type galleria is no accident! The thought was to encourage the students to stay in school by making the school less intimidating and by providing a better social environment outside of the classroom proper.
We just finished an interior renovation and exterior retrofit project for the York Region District School Board in 2002.
