Kingslandv Architects Inc. have been commissioned to provide complete architectural services for the new addition and renovations to Stewart Public School in Cambridge. Stewart Public School is an elementary school located in the old Town of Galt. The original brick building was erected in 1953. The original glass block portions of the façade were removed a number of years ago and replaced with a painted metal panel.
The existing school was in need of an expansion to accommodate the Ministry of Education’s requirement for full-day Kindergarten programs. The design exercise was to determine how to create the larger classrooms required. We presented a number of options and the Board accepted our proposal to expand the two existing classrooms facing Stewart Avenue toward the street. The addition required a new street façade for that portion of the building. In addition, we suggested adding a new freestanding canopy to the main entrance. The reasoning was, one, bring the existing entrance forward toward the street as it was becoming less obvious due to the addition in front of it and, two, to provide a better shelter at the main entrance. Other alterations to the school were included in this project that affected the administration office, teacher’s lounge and the library.
When the school saw our design for the new façade, Kingslandvwas given further instructions to replace the existing façade all along Stewart Avenue, now on both sides of the main entrance. This lead to a further commission, which was to replace all of the windows around the rest of the school.
