Erindale Secondary School – Elevator Addition + Barrier-Free Ramp
This project consists of a new elevator and barrier-free access ramp. The problem was caused by interior steps leading from the main entrance vestibule down into the main lobby. Our solution was to provide an external ramp off to the side of the main entrance in order to avoid the challenge of constructing an internal ramp or lift at the stairs. The lift would have been prohibitively expensive while an internal ramp would have been an awkward and unfortunate adjunct to the very simple modernist lobby. A new barrier-free entrance door was built into the existing window with direct access to the lobby floor level.
The new three stop elevator adjacent to the bus drop-off and parking lot provided internal access from the first to the third floor. Particular attention was paid to the appearance of the exterior shaft in order to blend its mass into the existing façade treatment.
Construction was carried out without disruption to the normal school program.
