KingslandvArchitects Inc. have been commissioned to provide complete architectural services for the new addition for St. Pius X Catholic School. St. Pius X Catholic School is an elementary school located on Jane Street just north of Bloor operated by the Toronto Catholic District School Board. The original brick building was erected in 1922 and remained so until 1969 when the kindergarten, gymnasium and library were built, but not attached, to the older building. The most recent renovations to the school were completed in 1988 and finally all parts of the school (old, new and newest) were joined together.
This project consisted of a new 1,641 sq.m. addition incorporating a new accessible entrance to the building with a central staircase, barrier-free washrooms, a new elevator and twelve new classrooms. A re-design made to the rear of the building in order to accommodate parking that was at one point located at the north-west corner of the school site, not only protects the children, staff and parents but has also allowed the street scape facade to become a homogeneous playground facing Jane Street where much of the playground had already existed.
The landscape design compliments the new architectural design by the addition of raised planter beds, refined by landscape rock, low maintenance plants, new trees and the application of mulch. All work together harmoniously to assist in softening the grade transitions of the site, adding visual interest throughout and in time will provide shade to those in the school yard without impeding on outdoor play activities.
