For the most part, Toronto Dominion Bank looks after the design and contract documents for new facilities in-house. On occasion, Architects in the private sector get this opportunity.
Kingsland & Pile Architects received such an opportunity with this new facility for Welland, Ontario.
This 6,000 square foot regional bank office and community bank branch required the typical banking hall complete with reception/information, tellers, vault, banking machines, conference room and offices for both the regional and community bank. A partial lower level included a lunch room, storage, washrooms and services.
The façade and it’s fenestration mirrors the major functions within. For example, areas within the bank involving money moving in and out of the bank resulted in the façade for that part of the building reading like a large, windowless, stone vault, one and a half stories high. The rest of the building is clad in red brick and incorporates features representing each of the two banking types.
The offices of the regional bank face the main road and therefore has a façade with a typical corporate, curved, mullionless, glass treatment from floor to ceiling. In opposition, the local branch offices have large multi-facetted punched windows with faux, brushed aluminum awnings and a panel of corporate ‘TD green’ glazed block separating each opening.
